Rising Glaswegian band Humour have announced that their debut album will be released this summer, ‘Learning Greek,’ will be released through So Young Records on August 8th.

Consisting of 11 songs, ‘Learning Greek’ follows two EPs and includes last month’s single, ‘Neighbours’. The album also sees the quintet working with Idlewild’s Rod Jones at his Post Electric studio in Edinburgh.

The album’s title has a double meaning for frontman Andreas Christoloudis. Not only is it inspired to start learning the Greek language, but also by the idea of “returning to oneself by actively doing something, like learning about your history, reconnecting with things that were important when you were younger. In my case, it was the things I shared with my dad: poetry, music and language.” It results in Christoloudis putting a personal stamp on ‘Learning Greek’. Whether that be references to the Greek military dictatorship of the late 1960s, or finding a sense of national identity. The album also dissects themes of loss, anxiety, guilt and the concept of legacy.

Alongside the album announcement, Humour have shared the album’s second single. ‘Plagiarist’ maintains the throat-shredding heard on ‘Neighbours’ and pairs it with a loud/quiet dynamic, embracing a jagged melody. Thematically, ‘Plagiarist’ explores the struggle of creative burnout, as explained by vocalist Andreas Christoloudis; “Plagiarist is about being a lyricist and having run out of ideas and inspiration. In the song, the character is under pressure to put words to music written by the band, and realises that he can’t even steal lines from his favourite books because he has already used them all. He fears being discovered as a fraud and being punished for it with death.”
