Norwich punks Other Half have returned with a self-deprecating single titled ‘Transgression is Outdated’.
Drenched in feedback and distortion, it sees the East Anglia trio brood with satirical, slurry verses, in in the process creating tension.
Lyrically, Other Half consider it to be a “cowardly diss track,” taking aim at reformed versions of bands they once loved, as well as themselves. Commenting on the unnamed reformed bands, vocalist Cal Hudson labelled them as “reanimated corpses of bands that once used to deal in bristling intensity caustic joy.” He adds that those bands “now seem happy peddling a toothless, dead-eyed version of their former selves.”
As for referring to themselves, Hudson fears “we might just be doing exactly the same thing (minus the 20 year break-up/any kind of previous success)”.
‘Transgression is Outdated’ is the follow-up to last year’s ‘Dark Ageism’ full-length. It saw Other Half complete an unplanned three-album narrative. It was one where the characters from 2020’s ‘Big Twenty’ (Venn Records) and 2022’s ‘Soft Action’ (Big Scary Monsters) navigate life in their 30s, while continuing doing the same things they were doing as teenagers.
On the live front, Other Half will be supporting reformed post-hardcore band Bear vs.Shark next week, before joining Single Mothers for a run of UK dates in April. You can also catch Other Half at the Manchester Punk Festival in April, and then at the 2000trees Festival in July.
