When it comes to “exciting new bands” within the UK, Phoxjaw are most definitely one to be considered for such a tagline. Formed just over two years ago in Bristol, the quartet have been building a reputation as a ferocious live band. Their resumé includes a handpicked slot at this year’s 2000trees Festival and playing shows with Black Foxxes, Black Peaks and Loathe.
This month sees Phowjax truly make their mark. First, they’re releasing their long-awaited debut EP, ‘Goodbye Dinosaur…’. It combines grungy, distorted riffs with lyrical depth. ‘Triceratops’ and ‘Lottery’ have already seen the Bristol band receive plenty of praise. While ‘Dinosaur Bones’ ebbs and flows between its murky verses and stomping chorus. ‘Weapons’ is a meddling onslaught with pop sensibilities before ‘Plastic Wedding’ rounds out the EP, highlighting the bands more experimental side with droning guitars and its ominous atmosphere. Shortly after dropping their impressive debut EP, they’ll be heading out on tour with blackened rock n’ roll quartet Pagan. If you’re wanting a night out of big riffs and throat-soaring melodies, then the pairing of Pagan and Phoxjaw isn’t to be ignored.
As he had some quiet time before preparing to hit the road later this month, we asked Phoxjaw vocalist and bassist Danny Garland to pick out a selection of songs he’ll be playing on repeat while on tour.
Daughters – Satan In The Wait
Daughters are an emotionally intelligent band that have so much style.
noxagt – Someone Calls You Every Night And Says Nothing…
This is what you hear when it all ends.
Zolle – Porkediem
Zolle are good friends of ours. This Italian two-piece drop the biggest riffs.
Civil Elegies – The Idiot
My favourite Scottish band. Punishing noise rock that pounds.

Techno on the road. Always.
The Dirty Nil – Pain Of Infinity
Probably the most rock ‘n roll band on the scene and Luke’s voice is angelic.
Swans – Bring the Sun
Swans are a beautiful and majestic creature.
Idles – 1049 Gotho
BRISTTOLLLL! Punk is never dead
Talking Heads – This Must Be the Place
Best. Band. Ever
