Hailing from Brighton via Newcastle, noise-pop merchants Sick Joy look set to follow a growing list of Brightonians to break out of the coastal town. With their debut EP pencilled in for a spring 2018 release, we’re premiering the video for their new single – ‘Smiling Shame’.
The track sees the trio, guitarist Mykl Barton, bassist Danny Piston and drummer Drew Michael, combine to create an addictive slice of post-grunge that is carried with urgency and a stirring chorus. “’Smiling Shame’ was one of the first songs written and came out pretty quick,” says the band. “It’s kind of about the frustration of letting something die but realising it’s alright.Sometimes it’s ok for something to fuck up, a kind of resolution.”
Its origins highlight Sick Joy’s tendencies as they explain; “We recorded it with a good friend Josh Harrison, sort of semi DIY, partly at home in the bathroom and partly at Brighton Electric.”
The DIY aesthetic was carried over to the making of the video. “We’ve been a big fan of Ralph Fuller (video director) for a while and his style and approach to his own art,” Sick Joy explains. “It was great to bash out a video in the same vein as we did with recording the song itself.”
