Brighton-based “gritpop” duo snake eyes are set to head out on a UK tour this week. To coincide with it, they’ve shared their latest single, ‘hdtv’. The track proves to be a hazy, grunge-like number that sees frontman Jim Heffy reflect on the multiple jobs he’s worked as a musician, while addressing the societal stigma surrounding minimum-wage “unskilled” work.
“I’m finding that, while I have a lot to be thankful for, times are tough and I’ve been feeling the pinch lately,” explains Heffy. “Minimum wage seems the norm these days, whilst the cost of living continues to rise. this song was born out of feeling trapped in crap jobs and serves as a reminder to find comfort in the little things. If you’re reading this, you are so much more than your day job. Don’t let the bastards get you down.”
Joined by drummer Thomas Coe-Brooker, ‘hdtv’ is underpinned by subtle musical depth. “in the words of Tom Hill, who mixed the track, musically we really ‘threw the kitchen sink’ at this one,” snake eyes‘ Jim Heffy shares. “we got trumpets in there, vinyl scratching (which brooker taught himself to do after we decided the end of the song was gagging for it) and a healthy amount of cowbell for good measure. we hope this summer bop makes you feel better.”
It is the third track Snake Eyes has released this year, following ‘Hug Me’ and ‘jar full of wasps’.
