Rising modern grunge duo Softcult has revealed plans for their long-awaited debut album. Due for release on January 30th, 2026, ‘When A Flower Doesn’t Grow’ will be released through Easy Life Records.

Described as the sibling pair’s “boldest and most vulnerable work yet,” its 11 tracks promise to take listeners on a journey of self-discovery for Mercedes and Phoenix Arn-Horn.  “I was rootbound. I was disappearing, shrinking, withering away,” explains vocalist Mercedes. “The truth is, nothing can thrive in an environment where it is stifled.”

With themes of trauma, disillusionment, empowerment, and eventual liberation scattered through the album, it was written during a period of upheaval. It results in the Ontario-based duo writing an unflinching collection that spans grunge, shoegaze, and alt-rock.

The album’s latest single, ’16/25′, follows Softcult‘s other singles that have been released throughout 2025; ‘Naive,’ and ‘Pill To Swallow’. On ’16/25,’ Mercedes’ textured guitars combine with Phoenix’s punching drums to create a tight-knit slice of shoegaze-infused grunge rock.

“This song is about the predatory behaviour of older men who groom younger women,” shares Mercedes. “It points out the double-standards and impossible expectations the patriarchy places on young women in our society, and the cognitive dissonance that older men who prey on young female targets perpetuate while trying to possess and control them.”
