Our resident “Something For The Weekend” writer, Rosie Kerr is back once again with three exciting new bands for your listening pleasure.
This week she recommends a lo-fi indie rock band from New Orleans, a female acoustic pop artist and an indie duo from Michigan.
If your label, band or company would like to become a guest writer for Something For The Weekend – contact Sean Reid to find out more information.
Donovan Wolfington
For Fans Of: Joyce Manor, lo-fi rock, Tigers Jaw.
Donovan Wolfington are a band from New Orleans, Louisiana that play angsty rock with a sweet southern drawl. They have a record out called ‘Stop Breathing’ which is 9 tracks and 30 minutes of wonderful indie rock, all for only $1 on their Bandcamp (which is insane considering how good this record is). If you’re looking for a new summer band to wile away the warm days, then I strongly recommend Donovan Wolfington, I think they’re going to be a new band to watch out for this year.

The Exploration
For Fans Of: End Of A Year, La Dispute, & TTNG
The Exploration are duo, Kyle and Garret from Grand Rapids, Michigan. “Founded” in 2009, it is only in the last week that I’ve actually become aware of them and their most recent record ‘Demography’ which was literally only released on the 29th March this year. The record is a collection of demos and rarities but it flows well enough to not sound like just a bunch of tracks thrown together. The vocals remind me of End Of A Year in places, but musically it’s light like TTNG. Essentially, ‘Demography’ is a really nice little ditty.

Maryn Jones
For Fans Of: Laura Stevenson, and Laura Marling.
Now, I know very very little about the lovely Maryn Jones. I know she’s from Columbus, Ohio and that her most recent record ‘Gift’ was released last year at a wonderful “name your price” download option. (Even more a reason to have a listen!) She makes lovely lo-fi acoustic pop and has a really incredible voice. ‘From The Back Porch’ is one of my favourite tracks on the record so if you want to listen to something quick before you download, I’d advise there!
