Song of the Day: Grieving – ‘Tarpaulin’

Don’t be fooled by their name, Cambridge four-piece Grieving aren’t quite the doom-merchants their moniker suggests. Their latest single, ‘Tarpaulin’, is a sharp, assured mix of (traditional) emotional hardcore with stylistic nods to those who have come before them.

Blending the twiddly guitars of Sunny Day Real Estate with the surging melodic edge of Jawbreaker and Far, ‘Tarpaulin’ is a fine entry point to what Grieving are all about. Past singles such as ‘My Friend, The Ghost’, ‘Ownership’ and ‘Start Young’ saw the quartet display an evocative and stirring array of emo, punk and post-hardcore.

On March 15th, Grieving will deliver their long-awaited debut full-length. ‘Everything Goes Right, All At Once’ promises to deliver insistent hooks and off-kilter energy in equal measure, with full of aggressive, and unpredictable sharp turns. Partly produced locally by Matty Moon (Lonely The Brave, Spielbergs) locally at Half Ton Studios, Grieving also worked with Leeds-based producer Bob Cooper (The Winter Passing, Nai Harvest, Self Defense Family, Fussy) at his Crooked Rain Studios.

While the title, ‘Everything Goes Right, All At Once,’ puts a positive spin on a line from the infamous film ‘The Room’.
