Song of the Day: One Step Closer – ‘Giant’s Despair’

Last month Pennsylvanian melodic hardcore group One Step Closer shared details of their new album, ‘All You Embrace’. This week they released a second track from it in the form of ‘Giant’s Despair’. Having instantly impressed me, I decided it should be today’s ‘Song of the Day’.

Thriving with a grungy urgency, ‘Giant’s Despair’ captures One Step Closer‘s transition to soaring territory, providing a bold hook in the process. At its core is Ryan Savitski’s contemplative and reflective words. The dynamic track sees him coming to terms that a former friend isn’t who he thought they were. ‘Giant’s Despair’ concludes with towering, shoegaze guitars and triumphant horns.

As previously documented, ‘All You Embrace’ sees One Step Closer expand their sound, taking in elements of emo, and ‘90s alternative rock. On the evidence of ‘Giant’s Despair’, and their previous single ‘Leap Years’, the Wilkes-Barre band look set to accomplish that with ease.

The release of ‘Giant’s Despair’ comes amid a North American run with Koyo and Anxious. However, One Step Closer will be in the UK in May. Not only will they be playing both dates of the Slam Dunk Festival, they’ll be playing three headline dates too.
