Ahead of their upcoming UK dates, Spanish Love Songs have shared details of a new EP. The four-track release is called ‘A Brief Intermission in the Flattening of Time’ and will be released through Pure Noise Records on November 21st.

It sees the quartet collaborate with various artists and bands. The EP announcement sees two of the collaborations be shared.

The first, ‘Cocaine & Lexapro, ‘ features Kevin Devine and is described as the heart-wrenching answer to 2018’s ‘Beer & Nyquil (Hold It Together)’. “I’ve been trying to work with Kevin for a while now,” shares frontman and guitarist Dylan Slocum. “We have a good number of mutual friends but had never met up until this. The reasoning was simple — our band doesn’t exist without Kevin Devine, so when he agreed to sing on a song, he got to sing on a song. He took what I had demoed as an angry, contrarian second verse and turned it into something delicate and full of pathos. It absolutely floored me the first time I heard his vocal tracks dropped in.”

The stirring track grows with fragility as Slocum and Devine address the fears of feeling stuck. However, unlike ‘Beer & Nyquil (Hold It Together)’, it’s executed through a mature lens.

The second preview of ‘A Brief Intermission in the Flattening of Time’ comes in the form of a track called ‘Berlin’. The synth-laden track features Tigers Jaw. Slocum considers the track “a spy movie of a love song.” With help from Tigers Jaw‘s Ben Walsh and Brianna Collins, it tells the tale of a partner whose questionable past keeps coming back to haunt a couple.

Speaking on the collaboration, Dylan says, “Tigers Jaw is another band that we love dearly and had somehow never met despite having friends in common, When we announced the Common Thread tour this year and saw they were on the bill, we figured we’d take a shot and asked if they’d be interested in singing on our weird song.

At first, we thought only Ben was tracking, but when we received the track back and heard Brianna doing the harmonies, we absolutely lost our mind. It’s the Tigers Jaw thing we love on an SLS song. That feeling is one of the core reasons we even toyed with the idea of having features, and in that moment made the entire experiment worth it.”

Both tracks capture a lyrical rawness that is threaded through ‘A Brief Intermission…’ as Spanish Love Songs look to provide a reflective pause that equally looks to the past and an uncertain future. The EP’s other guest features come from The Wonder Years and Illuminati Hotties.
