Touché Amoré Preview ‘Spiral in a Straight Line’ with ‘Hal Ashby’

With just 5 weeks until the release of ‘Spiral in a Straight Line’Touché Amoré have shared another track from the record. ‘Hal Ashby’ thrives with a punchy exterior while Jeremy Bolm’s words maintain the theme of descent that appears throughout ‘Spiral in a Straight Line’.

Named after the acclaimed American director, known for his work in the counterculture era of 70s cinema (Being There, Harold and Maude), Hal Ashby’s films often featured tragically misunderstood characters. It is this sense of misconception that weaves its way into ‘Hal Ashby’ as Bolm searches for some form of correct redirection.

The Sean Stout-directed music video for ‘Hal Ashby’ sees Touché Amoré‘s frontman watching an Ashby-esque movie at the theatre, with the music blurring the line between the action on-screen and in the theatre itself.

“The ‘Hal Ashby’ music video is half a love letter to Hal and half a dream-like interpretation of the song as a whole,” reflects Bolm. “[It is] Something that can be misunderstood as this or that – and finding the grace in-between.”

‘Spiral in a Straight Line’ is released on October 11th via Rise Records.

‘Hal Ashby’ Lyrics:

With a rose tinted view
You see clear enough
I don’t know if that’s true, so allow me to adjust
(so I can see things in a new light)
It’s in the way that I recoil
It’s in the way I can shut down
It’s why I read into every word that doesn’t come from my mouth
(a fools errand / a red herring)

Send me off
Send me away
I’ll take some time / recalibrate
I’ll try anything / anything
If it’ll course correct me

I find motive in everything
That’s as bad as it sounds
It’s why I can take a compliment without turning it around
(to even it out)

A misguided Hal Ashby catastrophe
Not exactly something you plan to be
You gotta handle it gracefully
