Last year Bellevue Days popped up with ‘The Sun Came Up When We Were Young’, an EP that deserved to be showered with praise. They’ve now returned with a second EP simply titled ‘Sad Boy’, and the Croydon quartet have once again produced a proficient collection of emotionally drenched songs that leave you hooked from the start.
‘Ripped Jeans’ intimately opens with tales of Alan Smith drowning his sorrows through drink before bursting through with a huge stride in the chorus. Carried by an underlying sonic tone, it’s clear Bellevue Days have picked up where they left off.
Like its predecessor, ‘Sad Boy’ neatly shows Bellevue Days tendency to go down the quiet-loud route with precision. ‘Something New’ is controlled by a close-knit intimacy that subtly threatens to release itself from the shackles. Led by haunting guitars, it’s slow build rewards you with a sonic wall of sound as Smith’s shows his relief by saying “so fucking good.”
‘Gratefully Gracious’ eases you back in with soft percussion before revving up with plucky guitars, before ‘High As Hell’ rounds off the EP in a bittersweet fashion with soft, warm harmonies complimenting twinkling acoustics.
If there’s any justice in this ever-evolving music world, Bellevue Days should be tipped as the next big thing. They’re a band that don’t need any gimmicks or an image. They simply have genuine talent for writing satisfying rock songs that leave you with an overwhelming feeling of excitement for their future.
Being classed as “ones to watch” simply doesn’t do Bellevue Days justice.
