Album Review: Morning Glory – Born To December

image

After last year’s ‘Poets Were My Heroes’, New York punk band Morning Glory see the release of new winter themed 7” ‘Born To December’.

‘Born To December’ isn’t particularly a “fall in love at first listen” type of track and although the added elements of piano and strings create a more interesting sound, the vocals aren’t particularly suited to it. It’s only after two minutes when the track really kicks in; that your attention is truly grabbed.

Thankfully, the 2 B-side tracks which are exclusive to the 7”, continue down the thrash punk route and it’s a much better suited sound.  ‘Jesus Christ Boogie (O Aneurysm!)’ is a hell of lot of catchier, as well as having some killer riffs. The standout track by far though is ‘Sara Says’; it’s fast paced, hard hitting and is definitely more hardcore influenced. You can’t listen to this track without imagining yourself in a small, grotty club, just losing everything you have and going mental.  Aside from that, the tracks aren’t stand-out amazing and are definitely nothing you wouldn’t have heard from by older classic punk bands like the Sex Pistols.

This release is more of one for the collection and unless you’re eager for the b-sides or a dedicated fan, it’s not an essential item and it’s not something you’ll miss if you don’t pick it up.
