Album Review: The Sounds – Weekend

imageSwedish indie-rockers The Sounds are bursting back on the music scene with their latest release ‘Weekend’; a melodic upbeat album with catchy lyrics and sweet melodies. The group have been around since 1998 (an astonishing 15 years), and have created the record to signify being reborn and rejuvenated. ‘Weekend’ is a back to the basics album, doing what the band have always done best.

Whilst listening to the tunes, it’s obvious they have been producing music together for a long time; they are completely in sync, and have played to their strengths. It’s clear The Sounds are well experienced and know their exact style and sound. It’s a diverse record, with a mix of punky dance tracks to more chilled out melodic easy to listen to hits.

It kicks-off with ‘Shake Shake Shake’ a cheery dance hit to capture the listeners, with a variety of musical elements and catchy lyrics. This follows in a similar style with ‘Take It The Wrong Way’, a buoyant hit with a punchy powerful chorus, and features a merge of indie, rock and pop that The Sounds nails, all coming together to create a hit that will get you up and dancing along.

Fans would have already listened to the title track ‘Weekend’ which the band has made available to download for free from their website. It’s definitely the recommended hit listen, as it’s really different and unique compared to the rest of the album. It begins with a slow-pace and wonderful acoustic riffs. It’s completely captivating, and features wonderful heart-felt vocals.

The other top track is ‘Animal’, which begins with clapping and acoustic riffs, backed by a heavy bass. The melody is enchanting; the chorus is powerful and packs a real punch. The song is a real mix of creativity, a dash of anger and a lot of musical talent.

Overall ‘Weekend’ is a powerful album, that doesn’t try too hard – it’s relaxed, simple, and easy to listen to. The Sounds have created a diverse album that cleverly infuses pop, rock, indie and dance. It’s a feel good anthem, perfect for winding down at the weekend.
