Blackgaze specialists Deafheaven have shared details of their new album. ‘Lonely People With Power’ will be released on March 28th through their new label home, Roadrunner Records.
It marks their first album in four years, following 2021’s ‘Infinite Granite’. It saw the San Francisco-founded group lean into shoegaze and post-rock territory, leading to mixed reviews. However, after celebrating the 10th anniversary of ‘Sunbather’ in 2023, it seems Deafheaven are willing to delve into their heavier side again.
The album’s announcement is accompanied by a track called ‘Magnolia’. It firmly backs up Deafheaven‘s shift back towards an aggressive sound with vocalist George Clarke’s deafening screams, Daniel Tracy’s pummelling drum work, and Christopher Johnson’s rumbling bass. Meanwhile, guitarists Kerry McCoy and Shiv Mehra add to the ferocious wall of sound with distorted guitars.
Speaking to Kerrang! about the track, George Clarke said of ‘Magnolia’; “It’s a continuation of how we’ve operated before. Yes, Magnolia is quite musically aggressive. And there are parts throughout the record that sound similar.”
‘Lonely People With Power’ sees Deafheaven once again work with producer Justin Melda-Johnsen (Jimmy Eat World, Paramore, M83) having previously collaborated on ‘Infinite Granite’. The album will also feature guest appearances from Jae Matthews of Boy Harsher and Paul Banks of Interpol.
In the interview with Kerrang!, Clarke called ‘Lonely People With Power’ “the strongest representation of what our band is.”
Fans will decide for themselves when it is released on March 28th.
On the live front, Deafheaven will return to the UK in June for the Outbreak Festival in Manchester.
