Song of the Day: Footballhead – ‘Overthinking Everything’

Chicago group Footballhead are getting closer to releasing their new album, ‘Overthinking Everything’. Ahead of its March 1st release on Tiny Engines, they’ve shared its title track.

It sees the quintet dig into their grungy alt-rock skin with swirling guitars clashing with gritty percussion, all the while vocalist Ryan Nolen is in a reflective mood, weathering him numb. With comparisons being made to Basement, Joyce Manor, and Microwave in the past, ‘Overthinking Everything’ indicates the ebb-sand-flows Footballhead take on the album of the same name.

Having originally started as a solo project for Nolen, Footballhead has transformed into a full band. Rounded out by Adam Siska, snow ellet, Liam Burns, and Robbie Kuntz, the five-piece’s debut album was originally released digitally last summer. However, having signed with Tiny Engines, the album has been remastered by Jesse Cannon (Basement, The Menzingers, Saves The Day, Somos) and will receive a proper release next month.

‘Overthinking Everything’ sees Footballhead produce 90’s emo/alt-rock hooks that wouldn’t sound out of place on a Jade Tree or Vagrant Records compilation. Wrapped with unrelenting urgency, it consists of 13 tracks crammed into thirty minutes. Throughout its run time, Footballhead deliver plenty of gorgeous melodies, driving choruses, and occasional spacious and blissful moments (see ‘Like A Blister’). It’s a whirlwind, addictive album.

‘Overthinking Everything’ by Footballhead is released on March 1st on Tiny Engines.
