Song of the Day: Knocked Loose – ‘Blinding Faith’

As they announced a new album, Knocked Loose return with a track that sees them at their heavy best. ‘Blinding Faith’ is the first taste of ‘You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To’ and doesn’t hold back from being thoroughly crushing.  With its stabbing guitar intro, Bryan Garris’ rapid screams, Kevin Kain’s unyielding drum work, and thrashy guitars courtesy of Nicko Calderon and Isaac Hale, it’s an unrelenting onslaught of metallic hardcore.

As its title suggests, ‘Bliding Faith’ is described as a “scathing indictment of religious groupthink, and the hypocrisy that can sometimes accompany an outwardly pious life.” In short, it takes aim at those who lean on religion despite not being all that holy. It’s exemplified by lyrics such as “Fall in line now, Bow your head.”

“It was just hilarious how many people showed up to church that I knew were rude, horrible, selfish people,” Knocked Loose guitarist Isaac Hale reflects on attending church with his mother in his younger years. “They knew that it made them seem like a better person — or if they said the words, it would redeem them of any negative quality just because they showed face.”

Diving deeper into ‘You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To’Knocked Loose‘s third album follows last year’s double A-side single titled ‘Upon Loss’. ‘You Won’t Go…’ sees the Louisville quintet pound through 10 tracks in 27 minutes, embracing their familiar chaotic ferocity with a textured, boundary-pushing sound, utilising evocative samples and shout-along hooks.

“On this album, we go the fastest we’ve ever gone; we go the scariest we’ve ever gone. We also go the catchiest and the most melodic that we’ve ever gone, and that’s the point,” Hale says. “Instead of branching off into a specific direction, we want to encompass ALL directions.”

‘You Won’t Go…’ also features two guest appearances with metal-meets-experimental pop songstress Poppy featuring on a track titled ‘Suffocate’, which apparently features “the most concussive reggaeton rhythm you’ve ever heard.” While Chris Motionless from Motionless In White appears on ‘Slaughterhouse 2’, returning the favour Bryan Garris did on MIW‘s 2022 album, ‘Scoring the End of the World’.

Furthermore, ‘Blinding Faith’ sets the lyrical tone for the record as its 10 tracks explore inward and outward loathing through mental and spiritual anguish. While the album’s title comes from an anxiety-ridden plane ride Garris experienced. Having admittedly suffered from a “borderline phobia of flying,” Garris found himself feeling nervous during takeoff. However, a woman seated next to the Knocked Loose frontman assured him by saying “You won’t go before you’re supposed to.”

The announcement of ‘You Won’t Go Before You’re Supposed To’ comes as Knocked Loose are in the midst of a UK/EU tour that arrives here next week. Support comes from Deafheaven and French hardcore band Headbussa.
