Just weeks removed from returning with ‘Peach Fuzz’, Watford indie/emo outfit Lakes have shared plans to release a new album this summer. ‘Slow Fade’ will be released on July 4th through the band’s own newly launched label, Lucky Art, in collaboration with UK indie label Big Scary Monsters.

Described as “dark, anthemic, and emotionally cutting,” Lakes fourth album looks to expand the band’s sound yet retain their heart-on-sleeve honesty. It’s paired with the uncomplicated mindset of “if it sounds good, then it’s good”. It results in ‘Slow Fade’ being a layered record that is vivid in tone. Additionally, this sees the quintet set out a narrative, something which they haven;t done before. “We’ve always been an album band. Typically we’ve written way too many songs and stuck the leftovers onto EPs, but this is the first time we’ve thought about having an arc; a beginning, a middle and an end, like a movie, which is kind of how the title ‘Slow Fade’ came about.” explains Roberto Cappellina. “I think because we were going into it knowing that we’d be doing it ourselves, pacing, sequencing and dynamics were something we were more conscious of.”

‘Slow Fade’ also features several cameos with High Regard‘s Georgia Casey (guest vocals), American Football‘s Cory Braken (vibraphone, synth), and Hovvdy‘s Bennett Littlejohn (pedal steel) contributing.

The album announcement is joined by a new single – ‘Version’. The slow-burning number is weighed down by Lakes‘ tender emotional side, building layer upon layer. As Cat Rowland and Roberto Cappellina trade verses, the band’s sound hints at a harder, edgier approach.

Commenting on the track, Cappellina shared, “Version is about living inauthentically, whether that’s in a job, a relationship, or just trying to save face in front of your mates. It’s me calling myself out.”
